Subliminal Messaging

It sounds a little creepy from my point of view but this trick is used in every day life and you probably don’t realize it. I got this idea from watching a video game commercial. I forget what it was for but this one guy that everyone loves come onto the screen and starts playing a guitar. And if you notice closely, on the end frets of the guitar are cigarettes while he is also smoking one. Yes it is for the bettering of a game that the company wants to be sold, but if you think about it, maybe the cigarette company paid to have a small piece of advertisement in the ad.
This is what I would like to define as a distinct type of subliminal messaging. Meaning that the commercial or advertisement that you see will be for something but the background to which the ad is for might be playing around with something that effect your conscious. Its hard to believe but your brain notices more things in a ‘message’ than you interpret. One thing that comes to mind when thinking about this is that when people yawn. If you are attentive to the action it sits in your sub conscious until you end up yawning. That’s where the term yawns are contagious came from. They really are since it sits there until an action is taken to deal with it.
Well back to the actual message. The commercial was for a good videogame but it looked like it was pointing out that the only way to be as cool as the character would be to act as he does, hence the smoking. Another thing that comes to mind is models and perfume commercials and ads in the newspaper. They might be modeling for just the smell with maybe a tester like in magazines, but if you notice they also where the best designers clothes. Meaning that you may only smell sensational only if you also where the best clothes along with the scent.
I have been searching around but I haven’t really found anything that has to do with this messaging in the educational system. There are some obvious ones that you can point out, and that is requirements for popular games being sold. They never tell you about system requirements but with the new graphics and things it kind of comes to mind that ‘I need a better way to deal with the problems at hand. Hey! Why don’t I just get a new system that can run the program?’
I was also reading the intentions of the Broadcasting Act in 1990. This essentially says that “No advertisement may use images of very brief duration, or any other technique which is likely to influence viewers, without their being fully aware of what has been done” (taken from blog.schools.co.uk/2008/07/01/subliminal-messages-in-school-education/). This is pretty funny since they actually realized that companies were actually performing this advertising technique. Also the website said that this does not apply to gaming industry ads. So these may be swimming with many unseen messages that definitely will affect the individual in their choice making.
So if you are willing to look around and find different things that advertise something but go for other objects let me know and comment. I personally find it amusing how this type of messaging works on the human being.
